In 1940, the residents of Murray voted to approve a bond of up to $25,000 to maintain a system of parks. Then in 1941 the decision was made to locate a new park on Chestnut Street between 8th and 10th Streets. The property encompassed 13 acres and later that year Mayor George Hart received a telegram from President Roosevelt approving $49,697 for construction of Murray Park. Chestnut Park was completed in 1944. Central Park was developed in 1976.
Presently the Murray-Calloway County Parks encompasses 164.2 acres with two community parks.
